  • Conversion of cooked items from cups to grams

    Hi

I have a number of items that I need converting from cups to grams. They are all cooked.

1/3 Cup of cooked cous cous
    1/2 cup of mashed potatoes
    1/2 cup of cooked rice
    1/2 cup of cooked spagatti
    1/2 cup of cooked noodles
1/3 cup of cooked kidney beans/lentils/chickpeas.

I know some of these may all work out the same but I am not sure which ones as I have no idea of cup sizes. All help gratefully recieved

You might be best to get a set of measuring cups and an electronic kitchen scale and weigh them? - Do any of your friends/workmates have such items?

The best resource for this is the USDA database which gives way too much information, but does give the density of the food, look for grams per cup after you select food type:
      http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

A US measuring cup is about 236.6 mL (just use 240 mL). For your specified ingredients, densities in grams per cup are
157 g/cup of cooked cous cous
      210 g/cup of mashed potatoes
      158 g/cup of cooked rice
      140 g/cup of cooked spaghetti
      160 g/cup of cooked noodles
      177 / 198 / 164 g/cup of cooked kidney beans/lentils/chickpeas.

All of these absorb considerable water weight when cooking; dry weight is less.

        Hi

That's perfect. Thanks for that. Especially the link. Very handy.
