    Re: Cubic yards to pound

I found data from Reade on various types of dirt.

Earth, loam, dry, excavated - 2106 pounds/cubic yard
    Earth, moist, excavated - 2430 pounds/cubic yard
    Earth, wet, excavated - 2700 pounds/cubic yard
    Earth, dense - 3375 pounds/cubic yard
Earth, soft loose mud - 2916 pounds/cubic yard
    Earth, packed - 2565 pounds/cubic yard
    Earth, Fullers, raw - 1134 pounds/cubic yard

use the "loam" figure from post 2. About 2100 lb/ydł but subject to considerable variation with moisture content, and the composition of the dry soil; high organic content (humus) would make it lighter, high moisture content heavier)

If you're trying to figure out how many 40# bags would equal a yard of dirt for price comparison (i.e., should you buy a bag of dirt from the Big Box store or should you order a yard of dirt from the nursery), then I suggest estimating about 1.5 bags per yard (i.e., 60#s ~1yard).

Perhaps per cubic foot (1/27 of cubic yard), certainly not per cubic yard. Note that all the figures above for various types of dirt are around 2000 - 3000 pounds per cubic yard.

According to http://www.hpwt.de/Mineralien/Steinsalze.htm, solid halite (rock salt) has a density of around 2.15 g/cm3, which is approximately 3624 lbs/yd3

Broken, it will have a density in the range of 1.28 and 1.44 g/cm3, so around 2158 to 2425 lbs/yd3. This is approximate as density is dependent on the gradation, moisture content and the source.

Depends on the material. Feathers? Concrete? Lead?

Standard State of California conversion for soil is 1.35 tons/cubic yard.
