  • Convert ppm to micrograms per cubic metre

    I need a conversion of 330 ppm of NO2 to micrograms per cubic metre.

    Thanks,

    John

    ppm is equivalent to mg/kg

    So you just need to find out the density of the solution. Multiply the density in kg/m by mg/kg and you get mg/m. From there its not difficult to convert mg/m to g/m

    Not exactly sure of your situation, is it parts NO2 per million parts solution? Then its the solution you need the density of.

      Thanks Robert.

      My situation is that we have taken an emissions test. The air sample contained 330 ppm of NO2.

      Does this information help.

        Re: Convert ppm to micrograms per cubic metre

        Hi,

        for gas systems, 330ppm is 330uL/L, or 0.33L/cubic meter

        I'm off work at the moment for school holidays, and my SI Chemical data book is at work.

        However from memory, one mole of gas occupys 22.4L at stp (0C, 1atm). The molar mass of NO2 is 46g/mol, so

        0.33/22.4 x 46 = 0.6776g.

        This is 677.6mg per cubic meter. You will need to correct this for the actual amount that one mole of gas occupies at whatever temperature your sample was measured at. Sorry about the lack of concrete help.

          Oh dear... for ug, 677,600 or thereabouts.

            Re: Convert ppm to micrograms per cubic metre

            Thanks.

            The temperature of the gas was 943 F
            The temperature of the air was 48 F

            I hope this is enough information to get the conversion.

                  Caline 4 indicates results give CO prediction at 14ppm . how do I convert it to micrograms per cubic metre?

                    Re: Convert ppm to micrograms per cubic metre

                    Dear John,

                    Mrs X has basically told you what to do but you also need to ensure that you correct for temperature

                    ppm(stp) = ppm(@ Tm) x Tstp / Tm

                    where Tm is the temperature measured and T stp is the standard temp & pressure

                    so convert Temp in F to K (Check this, formula I'm not US and who else in the world still uses F, miles etc But I digress....

                    Kelvin = 273 + 32 + 1.8F)

                    Follow Mrs X's instructions

                    ug/m3 = 273/(305 + 1.8F) * ppm (@tm) * M (eg SO2 = 64) / 22.4

                      I need a conversion of 4.08 grams per cubic metre to ppm.

                      Thanks,

                        Hi, is it for a gas system? If so, ppm is L/L.

                          Hi!

                          Thanks for the handy formula....

                          My question is can CALINE-4 be used for Non-reacting pollutants like NOx and not only for CO. As far as I remember CALINE 3 was more versetile model, in which we could model SPM, SOx and NOx.

                          Please clarify

                            Re: Convert ppm to micrograms per cubic metre

                            Easiest way of converting ug/m3 to PPM and backwards is to follow the equation:

                            Mass conc (ug/m3) = volume mixing ratio(ppm) x (pressure x Molar Mass / RT)

                            so changing things around you can get:

                            Volume Mixing Ratio (ppm) = [mass conc.(ug/m3) x RT] / [Pressure x Molar Mass]

                            This works for me everytime.
                            By the way:
                            R=8.314 (gas constant)
                            T=Temperature i.e. 298K

                            Then if you want to convert to PPB from PPM obviously mulitply by 1000.
                            Hope this helps...

                              Re: Convert ppm to micrograms per cubic metre

                              Along similar lines to the previous entries I have been using the said formula to convert ppm to mg/m^3. We are measuring styrene levels on one of our processes, inside the process room I have used constants at 25C and 1atm, but we also have an extraction system which moves the air at fast speeds. Will this effect the results I'm getting, if so is there some way I can accomodate for the volume of air passing over the Drager tube?

                              Many thanks
