  • Converting from mm to metres cubed.

    If I have an answer of 35,700,000mm cubed how do I convert this to metres cubed. I have worked out the answer a different way to get 0.357metres. What is the formula for converting this from mm to centimetres cubed and then metres cubed? I would be grateful for an explanation.

    there are 1,000 cubic millimeters in 1 cubic centimeter
    there are 1,000,000 cubic centimeters in 1 cubic meter

    I hope this helps
    if you look on the home page there is a conversion table

      I did forget that you wanted a formula.

      length times width equals square times height equals cubic.

      L * W = Square
      L * W * H = cubic

      to go back if all sides were equal you could use square root from cubic to square and square root again to get back to length or width.
      I think you were off on your answer. I didn't work it out but I think there is a zero needed on the right hand side of the decimal point.

        Hi Jim and Sandra,

        There is 1000millimeters in a meter.
        There is 100centimeters in a meter.

        This means that a cube shaped object with all its sides 1 meter in length is
        1 cubic meter, or

        100x100x100cm = 1,000,000 cubic centimeters

        1000x1000x1000mm = 1,000,000,000 cubic millimeters.

        divide your mm answer by 1,000,000,000 to get m

        35,700,000 1,000,000,000 = 0.0357m

        (There is 10mm in 1cm)

          Re: Converting from mm to metres cubed.

          1 m^3 = 10^9 mm^3

          we're thinking in the third dimension baby

              Two ways:
              a) Multiply the millimeters and divide by 10^9 (it's 1000 mm/m, cubed)
              b) Convert to meters and multiply, 0.8 x 1.2 x 1.2 = 1.152m
              The two ways give the same answer, I find "b" easier, but up to you.

                  20 L = 20 dm or 20000 cm

                  For a cylinder, V = (pi/4)*D*L
                  L = (4/pi)*V/D = 1.2732 x 20000 cm/(45 cm) = 9.88 cm

                  That would be the fill level, the container should be a little taller to allow headspace for thermal expansion.

                      A one-dimensional object has no area or volume, so zero.
