  • Figure pounds of loam soil to fill garden box

I have a 5 foot by 5.5 foot garden box I want to fill to the depth of 7 inches. Can you tell me how to figure out how many pounds of dry, loam soil it would take? I'm not sure I'm doing it right. Here's my calculations:

    5 ft x 5.5 ft x .5833 ft = 16.04 cubic feet.
If the dry, loam soil weighs 78 pounds/cubic feet then:
    16.04 x 78 = 1251.12 pounds or .63 tons.

    Am I doing this right?

    Thanks.

Yes, if the figures are correct, you are doing it right.
Are the 5' and 5.5' figures INSIDE dimensions? If they are exterior dimensions of the box, there is a little less room inside and you'd use a little less dirt.
