How do I convert tons to ppm? I'm trying to do this for CO and NOx.

Ppm means parts per million. It is used for dilute concentrations of one thing in another thing. For gases it usually refers to a dilute solution of a pollutant gas in air. So it is a ratio of how much CO (for example) in how much air. As a minimum you would also have to know how many tons of air.

However, gas parts per million is generally a ratio of mole fractions (it can also be ppm by weight or volume. So if you have masses of each gas, you would have to divide by molecular weight to get moles.

      I can suggest u that
      1 ppm CO2 = 2.12 GtC
Ref: see Gibert masters environmental Scs 7 Engg Chapter 8 pg 394 for the conversion

That number might be applicable to 1 ppm against the total weight of the earth's atmosphere. Certainly in a few cubic meters of air in a room, 1 ppm of carbon would be a good bit less.

usually i think when they talk about ppm CO2 in the atmosphere, like our current level of 390 or 391ppm, it is ppm for volume not mass.

what about giga tonne to million tonne:
I wanna convert 1727.7million tonne to ppm?

Ppm is a ratio of one thing mixed in another thing. So, how much of the other thing have you got?

By itself, anything is 1 million ppm. it is itself.
