    Where, exactly?

    It apparently varies regionally:

    bigha
a traditional unit of land area in South Asia. The bigha varies in size from region to another; in India it is generally less than an acre (0.4 hectare). In Bengal (both in Bangladesh and in West Bengal, India) the bigha was standardized under British colonial rule at 1600 square yards (0.1338 hectare or 0.3306 acre); this is often interpreted as being 1/3 acre. In central India bighas were standardized at 3025 square yards or 5/8 acre (0.2529 hectare). In Nepal the bigha equals about 0.677 hectare (1.67 acres). The bigha was divided into 20 katthas, and each kattha contained 20 dhurs.

                      1 bigha = 20 katthas
                      1 katthas = 20 dhurs

According to other posters, I cant find a resource, there are 20 gunthas in a bigha, that makes a gunthas the same as a katthas. So yes there is something lesser than a guntha, a dhurs which is 1/20th of a guntha.

                        Re: acre to bhiga

In Rajasthan the std. Bigha is 132X132 Sq.Ft.
                        1 Acre = 2.25 Bigha
                        1 Hactare = 6.25 Bigha

But in Indira Gandhi Canal area of western Rajasthan
1 Bigha is 165X165 sq ft.

                        1 Murabba = 25 Bigha

In another post it says gunthas or guntas are each about 1/40 of one acre, 33x33 square feet. Does anyone know if he proper spelling is guntha or gunta and what countries use this measure?

It is a local, traditional unit in India and several surrounding countries. Under British rule in the colonial era, various local values were redefined to have a relationship with the British acre, as a compromise between local rule and British rule. All of those countries are officially metric now, and the square meter should be used.

From the enormous number of questions, it is still used unofficially and can mean almost anything based on exactly where it is used. It is probably best avoided.
