    Electromagnetic energy has a dual nature, both particle and wave. Which nature is revealed depends on the wavelength (or frequency) vs the scale of matter it is reacting with. At higher energies (shorter wavelengths, higher frequency), the particle nature is more evident and each photon has a discrete energy:

    E = h*nu, or
    E = h*c/lambda
    where E is the photon energy
    h = Plank's constant
    nu is the frequency
    lambda is wavelength.

    In SI units, h is expressed in joules, although it is also commonly expressed in electron volts. Infrared radiation of approximately 1240 nm has an energy of 1 electron volt.

    3 electron volts corresponds to blue light of 413 nm, and 4 eV is getting to be nasty UV of 310 nm. 5 eV will break O2 bonds and form ozone.
