  • conversion of liters to kilograms

kindly help me to do the following conversions:
    liters to kilograms of diesel
    liters to kilograms of petrol
(so i can easily get kJ/Kg to kj/liters)

    thank you very much

Re: conversion of liters to kilograms

The first thing you need to know is the specific gravity of the diesel and petrol.

The specific gravity is the density of the substance compared to water. Water has a density of 1 kilogram/liter. So, 10 kg of water is 10 liters.

We could assume .832 kg/L for the specific gravity of diesel, but the weight can vary.

Hence you can calculate liters= kilograms / (kilogram/liter)

    Or

    Kilograms= liters * (kilogram/liter)

    Knowing the above, then have liters=1 kilogram/ (.832 kg/l)

So, 1 kilogram of diesel = 1.202 liters

Both the density and the energy content of petroleum fuels will vary according to refinery, source of crude, etc.

However gasoline (petrol) is around 0.75 kg/L and diesel around 0.85 kg/L. If you are looking for high accuracy, it should be based on fuel analysis of your particular lot for both density and heat content.

These values are derived from a DoE table in conventional units with conversion to SI for reformulated gasoline and low sulfur diesel.

Please could you help me with to choose these problem
I want to convert 100 kg diezel to liters
How many liters i have ?

        100 kg
        density is 0.82
        Temperature 27 C
which is formula in these case

Do you have density (which has units, kg/L) or do you have specific gravity? If you have density and the density is stated at 27 C,
          100 kg x 1 L/0.82 kg = 122 L

You may need a temperature correction for the density. If specific gravity, the specific gravity of water is nearly 1 kg/L, you divide by SG, then density of water at the specified temperature. At 27 C, the density of water is [U]slightly[U] less than 1 kg/L. You can look it up in a reference. If you just need rough number, don't bother.

Density is never a "naked number." It has units. The units are almost certainly kilograms per cubic meter.

              9840 kg x 1 m/831.90 kg = 11.828 m = 11828 L

You just divide mass by density to get volume, but the units have to be compatible.

Read posts 2-7 in this thread. Note that the density varies lot to lot, and you should use measured density.

Density varies with temperature; water has a maximum density very near 1 kg/L at 4 C. As long as it is not frozen and reasonably cool, that answer is still pretty good.

Just below boiling, because the water expands, 100 L would be only about 95 kg.
