  • miles to hours or hours/mile

    I operate a fleet of around 1600 rolling stock, I am developing a preventative maintenance program that is mileage based, but, many of our vehicles spend a great deal of time idling or traveling short distances under hard use. In order for me to accurately pull in these units I need to know how to convert miles into hours. I have been unable to find this conversion, any ideas would be great. thanks

    If you knew average speed, it would be easy. But there is no way to convert idling time to miles, because it is not moving.

    Two ideas you might consider:
    *Track the fuel consumption and use it as a basis for maintenance. It is used in some diesel programs as a way of combining mileage and severity of duty. (But I am not expert on such programs, you'll have to do some research.)
    *Install engine hour meters (commonly used on boats).

      Re: miles to hours or hours/mile

      I started the math on it but have not figured the correct answer. All of the variables make it difficult. But I have operation and maintenance costs associated with each peice of equipment which is broken down into mpg, fuel used in gallons and so on. I was thinking, in order to calculate the problem I could use this formula:

      G/N = I

      Where G stands for amount of miles traveled
      N stands for average MPH
      I stands for average hrs/mile

      I came to this conclusion after collecting data which included:

      avg miles/month
      avg consumption/month (fuel usage)
      avg miles/gallon
      working days per year after holidays
      working hours per year after holidays
      avg gallons/mile
      distance traveled between services
      avg miles/day
      working hours (8hrs)
      avg mph
      working days per month
      months/year

      Your thoughts about installing hour meters on everthing is good, but I tried to push that envelope and was shot down for the most part from upper management (budget concerns). I am still working on it however. But, in the mean time I have to figure out how to do it the hard way. I am not great at math so I am unsure if this formula could possibly work as long as I had the information to do it on paper. Thank for your support.---Matt

        Re: miles to hours or hours/mile

        I worked on it a little more... check my work please!

        Algebraic Formula that determines usage type/frequency and hours per mile

        A= MILES/MONTH
        B= GALLONS OF FUEL/MONTH
        C= AVG MPG
        D= WORKING DAYS/YEAR AFTER HOLIDAYS (249 CONSTANT)
        E= WORKING HOURS/YEAR AFTER HOLIDAYS (1992 CONSTANT)
        F= AVG GALLONS/MILE
        G= MILES/YEAR
        H= MILES/DAY
        I= HOURS/MILE
        J= GALLONS OF FUEL/YEAR
        K= MONTHS/YEAR (12 CONSTANT)
        L= WORKING DAYS/MONTH (20.75 CONSTANT)
        M= WORK DAY (8 HOURS CONSTANT)
        N= AVG MPH
        O= AVG HRS/MONTH
        P= DAYS/MONTH
        Q= AVG HRS OF USAGE/DAY

        Equations:

        A C = B
        B x K = J
        J G = F
        A L = H
        H M = N
        G N = I
        I K = O
        O M = P
        P L = Q

        (A L) M = N

        G N = I or hrs/mile

        (I K) M = P

        P L = Q or hrs/day (usage)

        **All equations are estimates based on averages taken from the available data.**

          Help.

          Engine meter reads 2200hrs. How would that equate to miles traveled.

            take HoursX250X12,500= MIles it would be in Thousands not mill. 68,750

              Re: miles to hours or hours/mile

              The hoursx250x12500 is close, but not really. I have diesel engine that has the following miles and hours on it:

              656,672 miles
              19,201 hours
              7660 idle hours
              1,367,985,000 total lifetime revolutions

              19201x250=4800250x12500=600,031 miles in thousands not mils.

              Close but, certainly there has to be a more accurate calculation.

                  With additional information.

                  If the hours are with the vehicle parking, idling, there aren't any miles. If it is being driven fast, there are a lot of miles. You can either read the odometer, or you have to determine average speed and multiply by the hours
                  (for average speed, take the change in odometer reading and divide by operating hours)

                      Re: miles to hours or hours/mile

                      when I worked for Deutz industrial engines we used 1 engine hour = 30 miles .this was only a rough guide based on how far the vehicle would have travelled at full load if it was in a road /rail vehicle. most installations our engines were in worked flat out from start up ,so therefore a 50 hr First Service would be equivelant to 1500 miles & we used to recomend overhaul At 9000 hrs (270 000 miles) . but I must stress this was only a rough guide ! a few other figures we used to change oil at 500 hrs (500 X 30 15,000 miles)industrial engine remember, but if the engine is in a normal road vehicle not under full load all the time this could be stretched a bit to say 650 hrs (19 500 miles).
