  • cubic yards to tons

I need to order 30 cubic yards of 3/4 inch stone for our driveway. One place gives quotes for cubic yards and another gives quotes in tons. I need to know now many cubic yards are in one ton so I can draw a better comparison between the quotes. Can you help me? Thanks in advance.

Dry gravel weighs approx. 1.425 tons/yd3, so approx. 51 tons
Wet gravel weighs approx. 1.7 tons/yd3, so approx. 42.75 tons

Water is heavy and S&G pits usually keep gravel damp for dust control. Scales love water! You'll probably be better off purchasing by the yd3.

FWIW, for a driveway, whether it's covered with concrete or not, get crushed gravel. 3/4" base would be better still.
