  • engine size liters to horsepower

Ok, stupid question, new vehicles are all listed by liters for engine size. Years ago I remember always touting the horsepower. How can I can convert a 4.7 liter engine to horsepower?

Re: engine size liters to horsepower

The amount of horsepower output by an engine depends on more than just the engine size. For example, a tricked out 4.7 liter engine will have more horsepower than an old stock 4.7 liter engine.

You wont be able to convert directly between them. For new cars you may be able to find data sheets that lists both engine size and horsepower. Otherwise you would have to take it to a shop to be placed on a machine to measure it.

does it give a power output of any description? This should convert directly to horsepower. Otherwise, what sort of engine? - Mrs X

If you look at cars on MSN Autos for example, you'll see the Ferrari F430 generates 490 HP with a 4.3 Liter V8 Engine. An Aston Martin DB9 has a 5.9 Liter V12, but only generates 450 HP. There are many other factors that determine horsepower other than engine size, as you can see. I recommend www.autos.msn.com if you are still looking for a car.

example: Ford engine, 8.1 liter. How close is this to the 534 cu.in.?

You can convert engine size easily on the volume conversion page.
                  http://www.onlineconversion.com/volume.htm

8.1 liter is about 494 cubic inch

what you are asking is not liters to horsepower but liters to cid. right? ok a stock 4.3 in a s10 has a cid. of 262 and horsepower rating of 165. hope this helps. (show_blazer@yahoo.com)

Re: engine size liters to horsepower

converting liters to cubic inches can be done by multiplying the liters x 61 ...ex: 6.0 liters x 61 = 366 cubic inches - kinda fun to convert old engine sizes to liters as well - just divide the engine size by 61 - so a 409 (she's real fine) would convert to 6.7 litre or a 427 coverts to 7 litres. 289 mustang 4.7 litres. make sense?
