  • gr/cf to ppmv conversion question

    If I have 1 grain of sulfur per cubic foot of pipeline natural gas, what does that convert to in ppm (volume)?

    Is it correct to assume 1 mg/L = 1 ppm and just do a straight conversion from gr/cf to mg/L as shown below?

    1 grain 453600 milligrams 1 ft^3
    -------- x ------------------ x ---------- = 2.288 ppmv
    1 ft^3 7000 grain 28.317 L

    The question I have about doing it this way is that I believe the 1 mg/L = 1 ppm conversion is for a concentration in a water solution.

    Does anyone know the correct way to do this conversion? Any help would be appreciated.

    Sorry about the messy equation. This may look better.

    (1 gr * 453,600 mg * 1 ft^3) / (1 ft^3 * 7000 gr * 28.317 L) = 2.288 ppmv

      mg/L =ppm is for aqueous solutions only. For gases, you must use moles.

      1 micromole/mole = 1 ppm

      In your case you need to find out 1 grain of sulfer = ?? moles, and 1 cubic foot of natural gas = ?? moles

            I found the following conversion on the ceesi (colorado engineering experimental station) website.

            1/4 grain H2S in Natural Gas Stream = ~4ppm
