Can someone provide a formula to calculate the linear meterage of polythene sheeting on a roll? The polythene in question is centrefolded so that it is 31 inches on the roll (but opens to 62 inches). It is 140 gauge film and the material weight on the roll is 20 kilo.

I've bumped up another thread about what "gauge" means when related to sheeting. (Sorry, I'm not very comfortable with what "mil" means, we don't use it)
Your polyethylene density will be about .95kg/L, or 950kg/m³
Hope this helps.Last edited by Mrs X; 12172008, 06:04 PM.

Re: Calculate linear meters of roll of polythene sheet
Let me try to pull this all together and give an estimate for the answer of 384 m.
Mrs X: Some polyethylene does get up to 950 kg/m³. It comes in different types (molecular weights of polymerized sheet) and density varies from about 910 950 kg/m³. I'll use the range center of 930 kg/m³, since I don't know what type he has.
Assuming 140 gauge, means 1.4 mil, that is 35.56 µm thick. A width of 62" is 1.5748 m.
The answers below are sensibly rounded, but my calculator is carrying full precision internally.
Volume: 20 kg x 1 m³/930 kg = 0.0215 m³
Area: 0.0215 m³/35.56 µm = 604.8 m²
Length: 604.8 m² /1.5748 m = 384 m
(I would not assume this answer is any better than about 5%)

Re: Calculate linear meters of roll of polythene sheet
Width of Film = 62 inches x 25.4=1574.8mm=1.57Meters
140 gauge = 140/4.27=32.78 Gm/Sq.Mt = 0.03278 Kg/ Sq.Mt
Weight of Roll = 20 Kgs
Since, 0.03278 Kg/Sq.Mt X 1.57 Mt = 0.0514 Kg/Mt
Therefore, 1 Mt = 0.0514 Kg
OR
1 Kg=(1/0.0514) Mt=19.45 Mt
therefore, 20 Kgs will be 20X19.45=389.10 Mts
Hope this solves your problem !!
