  • Convert to Grams per Square Meter (GSM)

    Hello, I'm having quite a bit of trouble converting oz/linear yard to GSM. I need this to help me understand the weight/thickness of a few fabrics and I can understand GSM much better.

    The measurements/numbers I have of one fabric:

    Width = 58"
    Weight = 10.5 oz/linear yard

    All of the fabrics give the same information, and so I am looking for a formula to convert the other ones.

    Thank you for any help with this!

    We will convert the 10.5 oz to grams and the linear yard by 58 inches to square meters. Then we only need to divide to grams per square meter (g/m), often called GSM
    10.5 oz x 28.34952 g/oz = 297.67 g
    (1 yd x 0.9144 m/yd) x (58 in x 0.0254 m/in) = 1.3471 m

    297.67 g/1.3471 m = 220.98 g/m (I would round to 221 g/m, 3 digits of precision, just like original weight.)

      Thank you so much! I've already converted a few more on my own. You are a life saver!
